The foreign minister of the former regime of Ali Abdullah Saleh in Yemen, Abu Bakr al-Qirbi, met an EU official in Brussels and discussed the situation in his country, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) has learnt.

The news was confirmed only on Wednesday night by an EU source.

After persistent requests by KUNA, an EU source, who requested anonymity, made a short statement to the agency, saying, "There has been a meeting at officials' level, upon their request to discuss the situation in Yemen and the perspective for re-launching the negotiations under the United Nation's auspices, with a view to reach an inclusive negotiated political solution."

The statement did not say who participated in the meeting, but KUNA has learnt that al-Qirbi met a political adviser to Helga Schmid, the Secretary General of the EU foreign service, known as the European External Action Service.

The meeting came only one day after Yemen's ambassador to the European Union, Mohammad Taha Mustafa, called on the EU and the European Parliament, to put more pressure on Iran and the Houthis, to comply with the relevant international resolutions and end the war in Yemen and the human tragedy in the country.

This came in his speech before the European Parliament's Delegation for Arabian Peninsula in Brussels, Monday evening.
