children to participate in World Food Day marathon in Sana'a

BY NY Staff

Under the auspices of Capital Secretary and State Minister Abdul-Qader Hilal, Save the Children in partnership with the Yemen’s Children’s Parliament will hold the “Race for Survival” on October 15th at the 22nd of May Stadium in Sana’a.

The marathon is held annually to mark World Food Day. This year, about 2,000 children from 40 countries around the world will take part in the marathon. In Yemen, approximately 500 children from nine schools will participate with the aim of highlighting and raising awareness of hunger and malnutrition issues, the underlying causes of death for thousands of children each year around the world.

The Children’s Parliament has played a key role in organizing the event. With that, it is an event organized for children, by children. Jerry Farrell, Country Director for Save the Children Yemen, as well as parents and representatives from other international and national organizations will be in attendance.

Farrell declared, “Save the Children is delighted, along with the Children’s Parliament, to support this Race for Survival. Hundreds of children around the world die each day from malnutrition and starvation.”

He added, “The tragedy of this lies in the fact that we can prevent all these needless deaths. Join us in this campaign to raise awareness about these issues and, more importantly, work together to prevent these pointless deaths. Thank you everyone for running for a great cause!”

Save the Children was the first international organization to operate in Yemen, having done so since 1963. It’s currently one of the largest organizations seeking to provide a world where children have the right to survival, protection, growth and participation. There are 200 men and women working together in seven of Yemen’s governorates, in Sana’a, Aden, Lahj, Hajjah, Amran, Sa’ada, and Al-Hodeidah.
