SEOUL, Kim Yong-chol, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea for South Korean affairs and head of the United Front Department was dismissed, Yonhap news agency reported Tuesday.

The South Korean agency did not mention the reason for the dismissal, saying only that the news was obtained from an official in the South Korean parliament.

Kim Yong-chol headed the North Korean Workers' Party, which develops contacts with South Korea and the United States, and was a key figure in the second summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un last February in Vietnam, which failed following the inability of the parties to reach any agreement on North Korea's nuclear program.
