Egypt calls for int’l protection for Palestinians

Egypt urged Wednesday the international community to provide protection for Palestinians and to force Israel to stop its crimes against Palestinian people.

This came in a speech by Egypt's Permanent Representative at the League of Arab States (LAS) Ambassador Mohammad Arfi, the current chairman of the extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the level of permanent representatives, discussing Israeli aggressions and violations against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The responsibility rests with the entire international community to provide the necessary international protection for Palestinians and to force Israel to desist from these crimes, Arfi said, underlining that deliberately or unintentionally causing the loss of civilian lives, especially children, is a clear violation of human norms, rules of international law and international humanitarian law.

These painful events leave no room for doubt about what was confirmed by Arab countries and supported by the international community that there is no peace in the region without a just and sustainable solution to the Palestinian issue as the two-state solution is the only option that all parties accept, he added.

He said they were meeting today to discuss how to deal with the grave violations committed over the past 48 hours by the Israeli occupation forces and are still continuing against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and other occupied Palestinian territories, which undoubtedly threaten peace and stability in the region.

Arfi underlined the world should pay attention to the killing and destruction, and intervene to end the inhumane and unacceptable escalation within the occupied Palestinian territories to stop the suffering of Palestinians due to these violations.

The tragedy of Palestine in terms of killing, destruction, displacement and occupation has passed for 75 years, he pointed out, underscoring the need to establish an independent Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and for that state to be viable for living and development, which means a just solution for refugees.

He concluded his speech by saying they all stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and with the families of the innocent victims.

The Kuwaiti delegation to the meeting was headed by Kuwait's Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative at the Arab League Ghanim Al-Ghanim.
