Ministry of Environment on Wednesday launched "Creating sustainable green jobs for refugees and host communities through the green economy in Jordan" project. The project, launched at a cost of $6 million, came in cooperation with Korean Embassy, with a grant from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in Jordan, and implemented by Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). The launching ceremony was attended by Minister of Environment, Muawieh Radaideh , South Korean Ambassador to the Kingdom, Kim Dong-ji, KOICA country director, DongSung SEO, GGGI resident representative, Christophe Assicot , President of the Technical and Vocational Skills Development Commission (TVSDC), Raghda Faouri and representatives of the relevant ministries. The project focuses on enhancing possibility of employing Jordanian women, youth and refugees in the green economy, given the sector's " high" potential to find suitable jobs to promote sustainable growth. In his speech, Radaideh drew attention to the "remarkable" environmental challenges facing the Kingdom, including climate change, desertification, and water scarcity, which threaten the country's natural resources, and the consequent economic and social repercussions. Radaideh added that the "high" rate of unemployment and poverty, especially among youth, women and refugees, is a "major" obstacle to realising economic development. He also noted promoting green entrepreneurship and creating green jobs is an "innovative" approach to face unemployment challenge and contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change and boost sustainable development, to achieve potential of the green economy. He said providing refugees and host communities with the skills, knowledge and resources to start their own green businesses, and finding decent jobs in the green economy, are "essential to securing access of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups to these opportunities." The project, he noted, is in line with Jordan Green Growth National Action Plan 2021-2025 (GG-NAP) and supports Economic Modernization Vision (EMV), the green growth roadmap and its implementation plans, by providing new green job opportunities, enhancing green skills for job seekers, and supporting the green transformation of micro and small enterprises. He said all achievements in the environmental sector and the green economy were made, thanks to the Royal directives that culminated in His Majesty King Abdullah II's launch of global initiative (Climate/Refugee Nexus Initiative) during his participation in the Sharm el-Sheikh COP-27 summit, which received approval and interest by a large number of all participating countries.
