The European Commission Friday announced the allocation of 200,000 euro (USD 219,000) for immediate relief and first aid assistance to people injured or exposed to high risk in the capital Khartoum and other affected states.

This EU funding supports the Sudanese Red Crescent Society with first aid, evacuation services, and psychosocial support, helping around 70,000 people in Khartoum, Northern State, North Kordofan, South Darfur and North Darfur, it said in a press release.

Branches of the Red Crescent Society in 13 other states will receive support to increase preparedness.

EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic reiterated his strong condemnation of the fighting, and called on both parties to deescalate with an immediate ceasefire so as to enable medical staff and humanitarian aid workers provide life-saving assistance.

"We have been receiving devastating reports about loss of life, including the killings of humanitarian workers. I strongly urge for full respect for International Humanitarian Law, protection of civilians and the safety and security of aid workers, premises and assets so that they can provide emergency assistance to those affected," he stated
