SANAA, A Japanese F-35A fighter jet crashed off the northeast coast of the country after it disappeared from the radar.

The wreckage was found on the surface of the Pacific Ocean, and the search for the pilot was continuing, according to Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya.

Kyodo news agency reported that the single-seat plane disappeared after taking off from the Misawa air base in Aomori province in the northeast of the country at about 7 pm.

Kyodo quoted Defense Ministry officials as saying that the fighter was flying with three other planes on an off-shore training mission when it disappeared from radar screens.
