ADEN, Yemen, A total of eight fighters of the Houthi group were killed, during an attack launched against Yemeni government forces in the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, a military official said.

In a fresh military escalation, Houthi fighters launched an attack against a number of government-controlled military sites in Durayhmi district, south of Hodeidah province, the local military source said.

He said that, government forces managed to repulse the Houthi attack in Durayhmi, leaving eight rebels killed, following fierce armed confrontations sparked in the area.

Meanwhile, the official military spokesman said, shelling carried out by the Houthi fighters killed one soldier and injured five others, in the same district of Durayhmi.

Mamun Mahjami, spokesman of the pro-government Giants Brigades, confirmed that the Houthis carried out the most violent armed attack against sites of the government forces in Hodeidah.

On the other side, the Houthi rebels blamed Yemeni government forces of using artillery shelling and targeting their sites near the Faculty of Engineering.

Hodeidah is the key lifeline entry point for the country's most food imports and humanitarian aid. The ongoing internal military conflict, grinding into its fifth year, has pushed over 20 million people to the verge of starvation.
