Hurricane Hilary is expected to reach southern California on Sunday after making landfall in Mexico killing at least one person and inflicting huge damage, the US National Hurricane Center said.
It added in a statement wind accompanying the hurricane subdued largely, however it was still at 90 miles per hour (145 km/h) in Mexico's Baja California in the west coast, the first tropical hurricane hitting the state in 84 years.
Despite its relative weakness, it added, Hurricane Hilary could cause life-threatening floods and damage.
It anticipated 7-15cm rain in parts of southern California and souther Nevada in coming days.
The White House said last night President Joe Biden was briefed by senior staff about preparations for hurricane Hilary, which caused cancellation of some 200 flights in San Diego Airport on Sunday, and 184 flights tomorrow.
