Japan competes evacuation from Khartoum

Japan has completed the evacuation of all Japanese nationals and their families who wished to leave the Sundanese capital of Khartoum, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Tuesday.

Following the evacuations of 45 Japanese citizens and their family members who arrived in nearby Djibouti from Sudan on a Self-Defense Forces plane on Monday, eight more people, including embassy staff, have been evacuated from the conflict-ridden African country with the help of the French government, Kishida told reporters.

In addition, five others also fled Sudan with the cooperation of France and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, according to the government. There were about 60 Japanese nationals in Sudan, most of whom were living in Khartoum.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry said it temporarily closed the Japanese embassy in Sudan on Tuesday, as fighting continues between the country's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
