Kuwaiti official highlights media role in combatting extremism

Undersecretary of Kuwait's Ministry of Information Dr. Nasser Al-Mheisen said Wednesday his country was keen on promoting the media role in preserving the national identity and combatting the trans-border extremist ideology.

"Media plays a key role in protecting the young generation against extremism, and promoting the values of tolerance and coexistence among members of the community," he said in a speech to the 53rd ordinary session of the Arab Information Ministers' Council being hosted by Morocco.

He called the Arab media organizations to keep abreast with the latest developments of information technology.

Noting that social media networks have a growing impact on the various segments of the community, Dr. Al-Mheisen urged rational manipulation of these networks so as to serve the interests of individuals and communities.

He added that sound use of artificial intelligence could also serve the noble objectives of media amid accelerated changes and transformations worldwide.

"The State of Kuwait back every effort to modernize the Arab media," Al-Mheisen said, noting that Kuwait sponsored the seventh session of the Arab award for excellence in environment media themed "climate change and the future." Reiterating the call for a fair, durable settlement to the Palestinian question based on the relevant UN resolutions, he said Kuwait maintained firm support to the struggle of Palestinian people for regaining their legitimate rights at international forums.

Dr. Al-Mheisen is attending the current session of the Arab Information Ministers' Council, which opened earlier today, as representative of Kuwait's Minister of Information. (pickup previous)
