Minister of State Alia Abdullatif meets UNICEF Resident Representative

Minister of State Alia Abdullatif, Tuesday, discussed with UNICEF Resident Representative in Yemen, Philippe Duhamel, humanitarian aspects notably the challenges facing the education sector.

At the meeting, Minister Abdullatif referred to the humanitarian challenges arising from seven years of aggression and the US-Saudi-UAE blockade on various aspects of human life, as well as the effects of the discontinuation of salaries of employees of public units of the state, including teachers who face difficult living conditions since the transfer of the central bank's functions to its branch in Aden province.

She stressed the important role of UNICEF and other humanitarian organizations in supporting the education sector and contributing to the Government's effort to alleviate the suffering of teachers.

Minister Alia addressed the need for joint action to reduce the drop-out of students, particularly at the basic stages of their classrooms, owing to the difficult living conditions of their families. To request UNICEF, based on the nature of its function and its main objectives, to examine the appropriate formula in coordination with the Ministry of Education, and to assist the poorest and most destitute students in society.

In turn, the UNICEF Representative to Yemen stressed the organization's continued support for the education sector according to its possibilities. Education support is one of their main tasks.

He expressed his understanding of the nature of the challenges faced by teachers as a result of the current exceptional circumstance.
