In the days leading up to December 25th, foreign embassies and diplomatic representatives in Yemen cancelled hotel reservations for planned Christmas celebrations.
Security forces were on high alert due to the possibility of attacks targeting diplomats and foreign sponsors during the Christmas holiday, and raised concern at large hotels, embassies, and diplomatic installations.
As a consequence of loose security in the capital city of Sana’a, foreign embassies and diplomatic representatives cancelled reservations to celebrate Christmas at a number of hotels and instead held gatherings in secured halls instead. In addition, embassies warned countrymen residing in Yemen, and asked them to take extra precautions and avoid celebrating the winter holiday in restaurants and hotels.
Recent kidnappings of foreigners have raised apprehensions among expatriates in Yemen. Further embassy warning statements have asked countrymen not to travel between Yemeni cities.
