CAPE TOWN-- South African Police Minister Bheki Cele has written to Parliament here requesting a six-month amnesty period for illegal firearms to be declared.
In his request, Cele proposed that the amnesty period for illegal firearms to be declared should extend from Sept 1 this year until the end of February next year.
The Minister's proposal comes as the country reels from the killing of 12 people while they were travelling in a mini-bus in KwaZulu-Natal Province over the weekend.
Cele's request is expected to be discussed by the Parliamentary Committee on Police next month.
The committee's chairperson, Francois Beukman, said Tuesday that he believed the proposed amnesty could potentially help reduce the number of firearms in circulation in the country, a matter which is the biggest challenge faced by the the police in fighting crime.
