Assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Lisa Monaco met today with Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to discuss the urgent situation in Yemen, the need for a ceasefire, and the peace talks being facilitated by the United Nations. President Hadi and Ms. Monaco underscored their support for UN Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed and the UN's efforts to help the parties reach a comprehensive peace settlement. They agreed on the importance of ensuring that vital humanitarian assistance and other essentials are able to reach Yemenis in all parts of the country, including in the besieged city of Taiz. Ms. Monaco and President Hadi agreed to continue the U.S. and Yemeni governments' close counterterrorism cooperation, and Ms. Monaco reaffirmed the strong U.S. support for President Hadi and the legitimate Government of Yemen.
