The US military struck three Ansarullah-controlled positions, on Yemen's Red Sea coast, found by radar to have been the source of recent missile attacks on US warships.
The strikes, conducted early on Thursday, were approved by President Barack Obama, and initial assessments show, the sites were destroyed, read a Pentagon statement.
They were carried out in "limited self-defence" and were aimed at protecting US vessels, navigating in international waters, in the Straits of Bab Al-Mandeb.
The US "will respond to any further threat to our ships and commercial traffic, as appropriate," added the statement.
