UN Chief slams "failed leadership" in South Sudan

The leaders of South Sudan have failed their people, an "outraged" UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said following another upsurge in fighting the world's newest nation. Many civilians were caught up in the crossfire both in the capital, Juba, and on the compounds of the UN mission in the country, UNMISS. Up to 300 people were killed including two UN peacekeepers from China. Speaking at UN Headquarters in New York, Ban Ki-moon gave this reaction to the killings.

"Voice of the voiceless" will carry on criticizing war violations of children

Governments which continue to violate children's rights in conflict situations will continue to be scrutinized, despite their objections, according to a senior UN official. The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, Leila Zerrougui, said her office's mandate was to be the "voice of the voiceless" and compile reports on child casualties, based on "verified" information, wherever they occur. In June, Saudi Arabia objected to being listed in a UN annual report on Children in Armed Conflict for military action taken in the on-going civil war in Yemen. Ms Zerrougui took part in a High Level event at UN Headquarters on the Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Children Affected by Armed Conflict. She told May Yaacoub why the meeting was so significant.
