SANAA, The United States has threatened to take action against the Russian Federation, including economic sanctions, because of the arrival of Russian military experts to Venezuela.
US special envoy to Venezuela Elliott Abrams told a news conference on Friday that a list of options had been handed over to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, adding that much could be done economically and in terms of sanctions.
"We have options and it would be wrong for Russians if they thought they had discretion," Abrams said.
Abrams said the military was maintaining the S-300 missile defense systems, which Russia had supplied to Venezuela.
US President Donald Trump has called for the withdrawal of Russian troops from Venezuela.
Moscow and Caracas have repeatedly confirmed that Russian experts are on Venezuelan territory under a bilateral agreement on military-technical cooperation between the two countries. The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Trump's claim has no legal basis.
