Yemen parties urged to extend ceasefire

Warring parties in Yemen are being urged by the UN special envoy for the country to renew an existing ceasefire for another 72-hours.

A three-day halt in the fighting went into effect on Wednesday at midnight following a month of intense clashes between government forces and Houthi rebels.

The truce is due to end late on Saturday.

Food and humanitarian supplies were provided to several affected neighborhoods in Yemen during the cessation of hostilities.

United Nations personnel were able to reach areas that were previously inaccessible, according to the Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.

In case parties agree to the extension, he said, the ceasefire should be truly respected.

Twelve million people in Yemen, nearly half of the population, are in need of some form of humanitarian assistance.
