Amid Tensions, U.S. Hopes China Avoids New Export Restrictions

Washington: U.S. Trade Representative Jameson Greer expressed on Wednesday that the United States hopes China will refrain from implementing new export restrictions and will continue to supply rare earth minerals.

According to Yemen News Agency, China's Ministry of Commerce announced on October 9 that it would impose export controls on a range of goods related to medium and heavy rare earth elements, lithium batteries, synthetic graphite anode materials, and rare earth mining and processing equipment, as well as raw and high-strength materials, starting November 8.

In response, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on October 10 that the United States would impose 100% tariffs on goods imported from the People's Republic of China starting November 1 or earlier, exceeding current tariff levels. Trump justified the move by citing what he described as China's aggressive trade posture.

Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Beasant noted on Monday that Washington may delay imposing new tariffs to allow time for the leaders of both countries to meet and discuss trade issues.

Earlier Wednesday, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett stated that despite the escalating situation surrounding rare earth materials, President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping continue to maintain strong relations.
