Mahweet: Local authorities and public works officials in Mahweet city launched on Sunday a field campaign to remove unauthorized street stalls and other unregulated structures from main roads and public spaces in an effort to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
According to Yemen News Agency, the campaign was carried out by the Public Works Sector in Al Mahwit Governorate and the local authority in the city, in coordination with the Traffic Department, Community Police, and security agencies. This initiative is part of broader efforts to organize traffic movement and address congestion caused by the spread of roadside stalls, street vendors, and informal markets along major roads and transportation routes.
Public Works Sector Official Engineer Yahya Al-Qadi noted that field teams from the public works, sanitation, traffic, and security departments have been working to remove debris and materials left behind after the removal of unauthorized structures and to reopen public roads, particularly in heavily trafficked areas.
For his part, Mahweet City Director General Ibrahim Al-Nasser stated that authorities will continue implementing intensive field campaigns targeting unauthorized stalls, sales kiosks, newly erected sheds, and other structures built on sidewalks and public streets. He explained that these measures are intended to address recurring traffic bottlenecks, restore order to streets and markets, improve public services, and preserve the city's urban appearance.
Al-Nasser emphasized that legal action will be taken against violators in accordance with applicable regulations and that authorities remain committed to enforcing urban planning and public space management rules. Meanwhile, Director of the Public Works Office in Mahweet City, Engineer Bashir Al-Hakami, said the campaign would continue until all identified violations and informal structures, including sheds, stalls, and metal constructions obstructing traffic, are removed.
Officials said the campaign forms part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic conditions, facilitate the movement of residents and vehicles, and enhance the overall urban environment in Mahweet City.
