Aden: Dozens of migrants have perished in a tragic accident off the coast of Shuqrah, in Yemen's Abyan Governorate, as a vessel carrying 200 people capsized. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported 56 fatalities with 132 individuals still unaccounted for following the incident on August 3.
According to EMM, many of the victims are believed to be Ethiopian nationals. This devastating event underscores the perilous nature of irregular migration on the Eastern Route, a major migration corridor predominantly traversed by individuals from the Horn of Africa. The IOM emphasized the human cost of such journeys, stating that each lost life highlights the urgent need to confront the risks associated with irregular migration.
The IOM called for immediate actions to provide lifesaving assistance and protection for vulnerable migrants. The organization also stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of irregular migration. The agency applauded local authorities for their rapid response and reiterated its commitment to ongoing interagency efforts aimed at identifying and assisting survivors, recovering bodies, and supporting affected families.
In collaboration with partners, the IOM is working to mobilize resources and deliver humanitarian assistance to those in need. The organization stressed that this tragic loss of life serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for safe, regular migration pathways, robust protection systems, effective search and rescue operations, and accountability measures for smugglers and traffickers.
