Burkina Faso's Defense Minister Kassoum Coulibaly on Saturday reaffirmed his country's backing to Niger's junta in response to a potential military intervention by Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in this west African country.
"Burkina Faso is monitoring the 'aggression' as the military command will support Niger," the minister said in media remarks.
He underlined that Burkina Faso was willing to withdraw from the ECOWAS, claiming that the latter's policies towards Niger are "illogical".
The defense minister sounded the alarm that the region would witness growing terrorist activities if Niger fell into chaos.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) agreed on Friday to activate a standby force as a last resort if diplomatic efforts fail in Niger.
Nigerien military officers deposed President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 and have defied calls from the United Nations, ECOWAS and others to reinstate him.
