Conclusion of Rebuilding Project in Wusab Al-Safil: Houses, Roads, and Wells Restored After Floods

Dhamar: The project supporting community initiatives to rebuild and rehabilitate houses, roads, and wells damaged by floods in the areas of Al-Jurf Bani Musa in Quwayr District and Al-Hasab in Wadi Al-Khashab, in Wusab Al-Safil District of Dhamar Governorate, concluded today. The project began implementation in August 2024.

According to Yemen News Agency, the project is part of the program to address disaster and flood damages, aiming to reduce soil and rock erosion. It was implemented in partnership with the local council of the district, Bonyan Development Foundation, the Central Emergency Development Interventions Unit at the Ministry of Local and Rural Administration and Development, and the Wusab Al-Safil Multipurpose Agricultural Cooperative Society, under the supervision of the Supreme Committee for Emergency and Flood Response.

At the conclusion, Ali Atef, the Governorate's Deputy for the Development Sector, emphasized the project's importance in mitigating the catastrophic effects of the floods on the residents of Al-Jurf Bani Musa and Al-Hasab in August of the previous year. He noted that the initiative, led by Bonyan Foundation and the Emergency Interventions Unit with community participation, represented an exemplary model reflecting the revolutionary and political leadership's concern for affected residents. It also highlighted the pivotal role of cooperative action in facing challenges.

The closing ceremony was attended by Brigadier General Saleh Hajeb, Assistant Commander of the Fourth Military Region. Fouad Al-Qadimi, Director of Wusab Al-Safil District, praised the efforts of Bonyan Foundation and the Central Interventions Unit in supporting the reconstruction of destroyed houses and the rehabilitation of drinking water wells, roads, and agricultural lands damaged by the disaster. He pointed out that last year's floods resulted in dozens of casualties and severe infrastructure losses, stressing that community engagement demonstrated the importance of self-initiatives, reflecting a spirit of solidarity and cooperation, and turning the crisis into an opportunity to develop limited resources with strong determination.

For his part, Ali Maher, Head of Field Coordination at Bonyan Foundation, stated that the reconstruction project in the affected areas represents a model of effective partnership, grounded in the firm belief that the community is the main driver of sustainable development. He explained that the project included rebuilding ten houses, rehabilitating 12 houses buried by floods, constructing protective walls for agricultural lands over an area of 40 hectares, training 30 emergency response volunteers to stimulate reconstruction initiatives, and reopening damaged roads. He noted that these activities were carried out in partnership with the community, which played the most significant role in supporting the affected families.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Nashwan, Coordinator of the Central Emergency Development Interventions Unit at the Ministry of Local and Rural Administration and Development for Dhamar and Al-Bayda governorates, affirmed that the unit worked on opening roads, providing machinery and equipment to support reconstruction efforts, and constructing retaining walls and barriers to protect homes, agricultural lands, and drinking water wells from flood risks.
