Dollar Declines as Trump Announces Ceasefire with Iran

Tokyo: The dollar fell to its lowest level in two weeks as Asian markets opened on Wednesday, while the euro, yen, and the Australian and New Zealand dollars all rose sharply after US President Donald Trump announced he had agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran.

According to Yemen News Agency, the yen rose 0.6 percent to 158.68 yen per dollar, the euro climbed 0.7 percent to $1.167, the pound sterling gained 0.7 percent to $1.3385, the Australian dollar advanced 1.3 percent to $0.7068, and its New Zealand counterpart jumped 1.4 percent to $0.5810.

The dollar index, which measures the performance of the US currency against a basket of six currencies, fell 1.0 percent to 98.97, marking its lowest level in two weeks.

Cryptocurrencies also rose, with Bitcoin increasing 3.4 percent to $71,664.41 and Ether climbing 5.7 percent to $2,234.78.
