Sana'a: The Environmental Health Department of the Public Works Office in Hamdan District, Sana'a Governorate, has destroyed 7.6 tons of spoiled and expired food products as part of a consumer protection initiative.
According to Yemen News Agency, the destruction of the expired goods was overseen by Deputy Governor for Technical Affairs, Eng. Saleh Al-Muntasir. He urged the collaboration of relevant authorities and citizens with the Environmental Health Department to protect consumers from counterfeit and expired items. Al-Muntasir lauded the Public Works sector for its diligent market oversight and adherence to health standards throughout the governorate.
Public Works official Eng. Mohammed Ashiya and District Director Fahd Atiyah recognized the efforts of the Environmental Health teams. They highlighted the critical need for heightened consumer awareness regarding the verification of product sources and the checking of production and expiry dates due to the potential health risks posed to both individuals and the public.
Both officials emphasized the importance of bolstering inspection and monitoring activities and called for the strict enforcement of legal measures against violators, particularly those dealing in counterfeit or expired goods.
Meanwhile, district Public Works official Eng. Abed Shayea and Environmental Health Director Dr. Majid Awadh clarified that the expired items were confiscated from various wholesale and retail outlets during targeted inspection campaigns. These campaigns aimed to identify and eliminate expired and unsafe products from the market.
The destroyed products comprised energy drinks, juices, milk, nuts, cleaning supplies, and assorted biscuits. The entire destruction process adhered to official protocols and was conducted in coordination with the district's local council.
