Sana'a: The first translation competition for students from public and private universities and colleges began on Tuesday in the capital Sana'a, organized by the Higher Education Sector in partnership with the University of Modern Sciences.
According to Yemen News Agency, the three-day competition brings together 30 male and female students from 10 public and private universities and colleges. It aims to showcase students' talents in written and oral translation and develop their cross-lingual communication skills. The competition is overseen by a specialized jury chaired by Dr. Ibrahim Taj Al-Din, Head of the Translation Center at Sana'a University, and Dr. Sultan Qasim.
At the opening ceremony, Dr. Hatem Al-Duais, Deputy Minister of Education and Scientific Research, stressed the importance of the inaugural competition in creating a competitive environment and encouraging university and college students to develop their linguistic and research skills in translating complex texts. He explained that the competition would contribute to strengthening academic cooperation and closer ties among language and translation departments and centers at Yemeni universities. It also seeks to prepare a qualified generation capable of meeting translation needs in the academic and media sectors and international organizations.
For his part, Abdulkarim Al-Dahhak, Director General of Activities at the Higher Education Sector, noted the wide participation of students from language faculties and translation departments at various Yemeni public and private universities and colleges in the written and oral translation categories. He commended the efforts of the University of Modern Sciences in sponsoring and hosting the competition, describing it as the first of its kind in the field of translation.
Dr. Yahya Abu Hatem, Vice President of the University of Modern Sciences, commended the role of the Activities Department at the Higher Education Sector in promoting student activities, including scientific, cultural, athletic, and religious competitions, among students at Yemeni universities. He emphasized the importance of translation as a discipline that combines science, art, and creativity, enabling students to benefit from modern technologies and knowledge. He also highlighted its role in promoting cultural exchange and supporting academic excellence at public and private universities and colleges.
