Sana'a: The Grand Mufti of Yemen and Head of the Scholars' Association, Shams al-Din Sharaf al-Din, has called for a focus on "pleasing Allah" as the guiding principle for actions, irrespective of fears and consequences. This statement was made during his address at the annual conference of Yemeni scholars in Sana'a, amid a worsening humanitarian situation due to the prolonged Saudi-led blockade.
According to Yemen News Agency, Sharaf al-Din emphasized the dire humanitarian impact of the blockade, which has persisted for over 11 years, causing more victims than military actions. He noted that more than 27,000 people have died due to the blockade, surpassing the casualties from airstrikes and shelling. He highlighted the blockade's role in exacerbating starvation and suffering across Yemeni society.
The Grand Mufti drew historical parallels with the Quraysh's siege of the Prophet Muhammad, contrasting it with the ongoing Saudi-led blockade. He condemned the prolonged siege by Saudi Arabia, describing it as evidence of cruelty and harshness, especially given the traditional view of Yemenis as tender-hearted.
Sharaf al-Din criticized the involvement of local mercenaries, accusing them of abandoning their nation for financial gain. He stressed Yemen's potential to thrive if the siege is lifted and national assets are restored, enabling economic independence and improved living conditions.
He urged scholars to stand united in supporting Yemen and other Muslim causes, such as Palestine, without succumbing to external pressures. He referenced Islamic teachings on life's trials, emphasizing perseverance and divine wisdom.
In a sharp critique of Saudi policies, the Mufti accused the kingdom of moral corruption, citing instances of behavior contrary to Islamic principles. He highlighted the Saudi regime's alliances and financial dealings with Western powers as detrimental to regional stability and Islamic unity.
Sharaf al-Din called upon scholars to speak truth to power and defend the oppressed. He warned against the influence of foreign funds in Yemen, which he said aim to sow division and undermine resistance efforts. He reinforced the Islamic prohibition on bribery and the importance of maintaining integrity.
The Grand Mufti concluded his address by reaffirming the necessity of jihad in defense of Islamic values and encouraging continued resistance against oppression. He called for decisive action aligned with religious duties, warning of the consequences of inaction on the Day of Judgment.
