Human Rights Authority Denounces Saudi Airstrikes on Civilian Areas in Taiz

Taiz: The National Human Rights Authority has condemned the recent airstrikes conducted by Saudi aircraft targeting civilian areas in the Dhubab and Maqbanah districts of Taiz Governorate. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of three civilians, including two children, and injured two others.

According to Yemen News Agency, the Authority expressed outrage over the direct and deliberate targeting of the government complex in Khadir District, another civilian facility. This attack injured several civilian employees and citizens, and led to the destruction of the government building, which housed important documents and served the local community.

The organization declared the targeting of civilian areas and facilities as a grave violation of international norms and laws, labeling it a war crime and a crime against humanity. It emphasized that such attacks contravene the four Geneva Conventions of 1949, their Additional Protocols, and various international humanitarian laws, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Authority asserted that the destruction of government and service facilities is part of a systematic strategy to disrupt state institutions and increase civilian suffering, equating it to collective punishment prohibited by international law. It highlighted the violation of Article 52 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions, which protects civilian objects from being attacked.

The National Human Rights Authority called upon the international community and humanitarian organizations to break their silence and pressure for an end to these attacks. It held the Saudi coalition accountable for the legal and criminal repercussions of these actions. Furthermore, the Authority urged human rights organizations to document these incidents and affirmed its commitment to submitting evidence to international bodies, stressing that these crimes are not time-barred.
