Sana'a: A joint meeting held at the Shura Council on Monday addressed strategies to enhance the agricultural sector, focusing on boosting wheat and grain production to achieve self-sufficiency. The meeting, chaired by Council speaker Mohammed al-Aidaroos, was attended by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and experts in the field.
According to Yemen News Agency, the meeting, which included the Acting Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, Ammar Al-Kareem, and members of the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources Committee, delved into issues surrounding national wheat and grain production in provinces such as Jawf, Marib, Hajja, and Hodeida. Discussions also covered farming and harvesting methods, as well as the challenges related to purchasing crops from farmers and addressing marketing and technical obstacles.
The speaker commended the efforts of the Ministry of Agriculture in expanding wheat and other crop cultivation, despite the ongoing aggression and blockade. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between all relevant sectors to develop the agricultural industry, reduce import bills, and reach self-sufficiency in food production, as per the directives of the political and revolutionary leadership.
Al-Aidaroos also urged wheat importers to support local products by purchasing them at encouraging prices and expanding marketing channels. He stressed the need to activate agricultural cooperatives to assist in planning and implementing agricultural strategies. In his presentation, the head of the Agriculture Committee, Engineer Abdulsalam al-Nahari, highlighted the committee's vision for advancing the sector through optimal utilization of seasonal rains and effective management of the country's natural resources. He also underscored the importance of encouraging the private sector and expanding reclaimed agricultural land. The Shura Council pledged to provide recommendations based on the current realities to overcome obstacles and advance the agricultural sector.
