Amran: The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources, Dr. Radwan Al-Rubai, and the Governor of Amran, Dr. Faisal Jahman, have inaugurated a project to construct five rainwater harvesting lakes in the Amran Basin. The initiative, funded by the General Authority for Water Resources, is estimated to cost 238 million riyals.
According to Yemen News Agency, the project aims to collect rainwater and floods to recharge groundwater, addressing the decline in water levels caused by excessive depletion. The sites were selected after comprehensive studies and surveys, ensuring optimal efficiency in water collection.
Minister Al-Rubai emphasized that the project aligns with leadership directives to enhance rainwater utilization. He advocated for linking well drilling permits with contributions from well owners to groundwater recharge efforts.
Governor Jahman highlighted the project's significance as a strategic phase in managing water resources. He stressed the importance of community and contractor cooperation for success and announced a plan to establish a special account to ensure the project's sustainability.
Engineer Hadi Qareea, head of the water resources authority, noted that the lakes will have a capacity of 235,000 cubic meters. This marks the first phase of a broader plan covering 75 sites, aimed at reducing flood damage and creating sustainable water infrastructure.
