Sana'a: The General Secretariat of the Yemeni Olympic Committee, chaired by Secretary-General Mohammed Al-Ahjari, has approved the organization of trials for athletes nominated to participate in the upcoming Asian Indoor Games on October 18. These trials are set to take place at Al-Thawra Sports City, the Recreational Club in Sana'a, and the Sports Medicine Center.
According to Yemen News Agency, the meeting focused on planning physical, technical, and medical assessments for the nominated athletes ahead of the Asian Indoor Games, scheduled for December. Al-Ahjari emphasized the committee's dedication to enhancing Yemen's performance in international competitions through meticulous player selection and preparation. A specialized committee, comprising academics and technical experts, has been established to evaluate the athletes in various aspects and select those most prepared to represent Yemen.
Al-Ahjari highlighted past shortcomings where nominations were made without sufficient criteria, adversely affecting Yemen's performance in international and continental events. He emphasized that athletes aiming to represent Yemen must engage in serious preparation under their coaches and relevant federations, and successfully pass the required evaluations.
The meeting also addressed the financial challenges faced by the Olympic Committee and their implications for preparing national teams for international competitions. Officials reviewed past inadequacies in player testing and agreed on enhancing the process by involving specialists from each sport to better assess athletes' skills and readiness.
Members of the player accreditation committee, along with Olympic Committee technical officials, presented recommendations for the development of physical, technical, and medical assessments. The meeting underscored the necessity of selecting the best athletes to represent Yemen and urged sports federations to ensure consistent, year-round preparation, rather than limiting training to periods just before competitions.
