Sana'a: Palestinian expert on prisoners' affairs, Jamal Farawneh, has emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated and robust response to support Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention. Farawneh highlighted the necessity for a united front at the highest levels to address the extensive suffering and injustices faced by these prisoners.
According to Yemen News Agency, Farawneh made these remarks on the occasion of Palestinian Prisoners' Day, marked annually on April 17. He called for a concerted effort from all Palestinian factions, leadership, and human rights institutions, alongside collaboration with Arab and international bodies, to form a movement that adequately reflects the sacrifices and tribulations endured by the prisoners. Farawneh also urged engagement with Palestinian and Arab communities overseas to amplify this cause.
Farawneh described Palestinian Prisoners' Day as a symbol of solidarity and support for those held in Israeli jails. He stressed that this day serves as a tribute to the resilience of Palestinian prisoners, honoring their struggle both within and beyond prison walls. Farawneh underscored the day's significance as a testament to Palestinian determination and resistance, highlighting the ongoing struggle against the conditions imposed by Israeli authorities.
He elaborated on the historical context, noting that since 1967, the Palestinian prisoners' movement has witnessed the deaths of over 340 prisoners inside Israeli prisons, with 89 deaths occurring after October 7, 2023. Farawneh further disclosed that Israel has detained over one million Palestinians, with 9,600 still imprisoned, including 84 women and 350 children. Additionally, 1,300 prisoners from the Gaza Strip are labeled as 'unlawful combatants.' Since October 7, 2023, more than 25,000 Palestinians have been arrested.
Farawneh emphasized the need to spotlight the hardships faced by prisoners, especially in light of recent legal developments permitting the execution of detainees. He urged that Palestinian Prisoners' Day be used as an opportunity to assess and enhance efforts in mobilizing support for prisoners across Palestinian, Arab, and international spheres.
