Accra:The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has denounced the ongoing attacks by Saudi forces on civilians and civilian infrastructure in Yemen. A recent incident involved airstrikes in Maqbanah District, Taiz Governorate, resulting in the deaths of nine civilians, including a woman and a girl, and injuring 16 others, among them women and children.
According to Yemen News Agency, the ministry issued a statement criticizing the continuous targeting of civilians and civilian objects by Saudi forces, labeling it a blatant breach of international humanitarian law, especially citing the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 and Additional Protocol I of 1977.
The ministry expressed disapproval of the international community’s passive response to these actions, arguing that it contradicts their proclaimed commitment to human rights. This inaction, the ministry suggested, effectively endorses further Saudi aggression and implicates the international community in these transgressions.
The statement urged the international community, with emphasis on the Security Council, the Human Rights Council, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and human rights organizations, to reject double standards and firmly condemn the crimes against the Yemeni people. It called for pressure on Saudi forces to adhere to international humanitarian obligations.
In conclusion, the ministry emphasized that such crimes will not go unpunished and that those responsible will be held accountable for their actions against innocent civilians.
