Sana'a: A seminar titled "Artificial Intelligence and Decision-Making" was held on Monday at the Shura Council, organized by the Council's General Secretariat in cooperation with the Modern Specialized University. Attended by Shura Council members Dr. Najib Salem, Dr. Nabil Al-Hammadi, Mohsen Jamil, Khaled Mahmoud, and Mohammed Thawabah, the seminar discussed a paper presented by the President of the Modern Specialized University, Dr. Mujahid Al-Jabr, regarding artificial intelligence and its applications in decision-making.
According to Yemen News Agency, the Secretary-General of the Shura Council, Ali Yahya Abdul-Mughni, emphasized that the General Secretariat was keen to organize this event and include it in the current year's plan. He noted that it falls within a series of specialized programs aimed at enhancing the Council's performance to fulfill its constitutional duties during this phase. He highlighted the importance of concerted efforts among all relevant entities to formulate integrated national visions and proposals-spanning legislative, media, and cultural spheres-that help accommodate rapid developments in artificial intelligence technology and harness it to serve sustainable development goals.
Dr. Al-Jabr, an expert in artificial intelligence and intelligent systems, outlined the significance of artificial intelligence in improving efficiency and productivity, analyzing data, supporting strategic planning, and boosting operational efficiency. He noted that artificial intelligence has become a reliable gateway for national decision-making independence, regardless of a country's current economic or developmental status, and will serve to narrow the knowledge gap between developed nations and the developing world.
The paper presented examples of AI applications in decision-making across various sectors, including business, healthcare, education, marketing, government, and agriculture. It also focused on the challenges and risks associated with artificial intelligence, particularly regarding privacy and data security. It emphasized the importance of transparency, privacy protection, information verification, and human accountability as fundamental prerequisites for its use.
Dr. Al-Jabr concluded with a series of recommendations and proposals, stressing the importance of formulating a comprehensive national AI strategy. This strategy should outline clear objectives for utilizing AI to support decision-making and drive economic and social development in Yemen. He further highlighted the need to develop digital infrastructure that enables public and private institutions to leverage AI technologies and data analytics. Such infrastructure would facilitate a shift from intuition-based decision-making to data- and evidence-based approaches within these institutions, while also supporting the establishment of national governance frameworks to ensure the safe and ethical use of artificial intelligence.
