Third Scientific Forum Highlights Impact of Physical Therapy on Elderly Care in Yemen

Sana'a: The Third Forum on Physical Therapy and its Role in Improving the Quality of Life for the Elderly in Yemen was convened in Sana'a, focusing on the integration of physical therapy into elder care. This event, organized by the Medical Physiotherapists Syndicate, gathered physical therapy specialists and students from various medical and health institutions to discuss several pivotal working papers.

According to Yemen News Agency, the forum examined the existing state and future aspirations of geriatric and elderly diseases in Yemen. It emphasized the need for comprehensive physical therapy policies and the role of media and health education in promoting awareness about the importance of physical therapy for the elderly population. Specific topics included physical therapy approaches for conditions such as tremors, arthritis, and osteoporosis, and the comprehensive evaluation of elderly individuals within therapy programs.

Dr. Essam Al-Rumaima, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Environment for the Health Studies and Research Sector, highlighted the essential role physical therapy plays in public health. He noted its effectiveness in alleviating chronic pain from joint and muscle ailments, as well as its contribution to preventing falls and injuries through improved balance and flexibility, thereby maintaining mobility and independence for the elderly. Dr. Al-Rumaima emphasized the Ministry's commitment to integrating physical therapy into its health initiatives.

The forum underscored the necessity for expanding physical therapy and rehabilitation services, training specialized personnel in the latest practices, and increasing public awareness of physical therapy's role in enhancing elderly care. Dr. Al-Rumaima called for collaboration with universities and research centers to support evidence-based health policies through scientific research and studies.

In his address, Dr. Abu Al-Fadl Al-Montaser, President of the Physical Therapists Syndicate, outlined the forum's goals of strengthening partnerships with official and community entities. He stressed the importance of strategic planning in the field to improve services for the elderly, promote scientific research, and formulate a national health policy for physical therapy. The forum also aimed to foster intergenerational interaction and encourage community support for the elderly.

Yahya Al-Razi, a member of the Syndicate, presented an overview of the Syndicate's recent activities and the challenges encountered. The forum concluded with the recognition of the Ministry's leadership, founding members of the Physical Therapy Association, and the scientific and organizing committees for their contributions to the field.
