Turmeric Cultivation in Malahan: Promising Step for Rural Families

General

Malahan: The cultivation of turmeric in the Malahan district of Mahweet governorate has seen a significant expansion, signaling a major boost for sustainable agricultural development and rural income. Areas such as Bahish, Waqban, Wadi Ma'in, and Wadi Hatab have become renowned for this cash crop.

According to Yemen News Agency, Adel al-Shamasna, head of Malahan Multi-Purpose Agricultural Cooperative, has stated that the society has provided critical support through mechanized farming services, agricultural extension (guidance), and marketing assistance. The success of turmeric in Malahan has even led to its expansion into the neighboring districts of Bani Sa'd and Ar-Rujum.

Farmers in Wadi Habsh are currently harvesting, washing, and preparing their crops for sale. While they celebrate the high quality and nutritional value of their harvest, they have called for better market access and fair pricing to encourage further expansion. A primary challenge remains the scarcity of irrigation during dry seasons. Farmers are urging authorities to support community initiatives for building water barriers and dams to harvest rainwater, ensuring the long-term sustainability of this "golden" crop.
