Mokha: The UN has voiced grave concern over the seizure by Yemen's Houthi group of a key humanitarian compound and its assets in the Red Sea port city of Mokha. UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq highlighted the incident, noting that the compound was essential for housing staff from UN agencies who provide humanitarian assistance to vulnerable communities in the region.
According to TRTworld.com, all UN personnel had vacated the compound before it was seized and are reported to be safe and accounted for. Haq emphasized the importance of protecting humanitarian personnel, premises, and assets at all times. He called for safe and unhindered access to ensure that aid continues to reach those in need.
Concerns have also been raised about 73 UN and NGO staff members detained in Yemen. Haq stated that there is no positive update on their situation and that the UN remains concerned about their condition, urging for their release. The UN Department of Safety and Security is actively monitoring the situation and reviewing operations and presence in Yemen, prioritizing the safety of UN personnel, including national staff.
Humanitarian workers on the ground report that civilians continue to flee from the conflict, with approximately 18,000 households displaced since the beginning of September.
