Hodeida: Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for International Cooperation, Ambassador Ismail al-Mutawakel, and the head of the ICRC delegation in Yemen, Christine Shibola, visited the Central Correctional Facility in Hodeida governorate to evaluate its conditions and requirements.
According to Yemen News Agency, the facility's administration highlighted several urgent needs, including maintenance of the water and sewage networks, a consistent electricity supply, and the restoration of inmate wards and the women's building. Ambassador al-Mutawakel emphasized that the visit aimed to bolster humanitarian cooperation with the ICRC to enhance services in correctional facilities, focusing on the critical needs for water, electricity, and improved health infrastructure.
Christine Shibola of the ICRC expressed her gratitude for the government's collaboration and affirmed the committee's commitment to addressing the facility's pressing needs, particularly regarding water and energy. She also mentioned plans to dispatch an engineering team to evaluate the situation and propose sustainable solutions.
Representatives from the Yemeni Red Crescent Society and the ICRC underscored the significance of joint efforts to enhance conditions, especially in health and environmental aspects, and affirmed their readiness to collaborate further. Officials from the Ministry of Interior and the Rehabilitation and Reform Authority also highlighted the necessity for ongoing coordination to implement urgent improvements in correctional facilities, deeming it a humanitarian imperative.
