Gaza: The early hours of last night and today witnessed a surge of Palestinian and international anger following the Israeli navy's interception of the Global Steadfastness Flotilla, which was heading towards the Gaza Strip. This act of piracy resulted in the seizure of several ships and the abduction of activists onboard, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg.
According to Yemen News Agency, the Israeli navy intercepted the flotilla's ships, which were carrying relief aid and unarmed activists and human rights defenders, as they attempted to breach the blockade on Gaza. The navy reportedly rammed one of the ships and used water cannons on others. Israeli drones also hovered over the flotilla as it aimed to break the siege on Gaza.
The organizers of the flotilla have stated that the Israeli objections will not deter their mission to break the blockade and open a humanitarian corridor, with fewer than 30 boats still heading towards Gaza. The Israeli military has revealed it seized over 40 boats, with some stuck at sea.
Hamas and other Palestinian movements have condemned the interception as piracy and terrorism. They argue that these actions violate international conventions and hold Israel responsible for the safety of the participants. The UN Special Rapporteur and international organizations like Amnesty International have also condemned the interception and called for continued international pressure.
Internationally, several countries, including Colombia, South Africa, Iran, Oman, Spain, France, Switzerland, Turkey, Belgium, and Ireland, have expressed their condemnation of Israel's actions. Protests and calls for a general strike have erupted in various cities worldwide in response to the interception.
Greta Thunberg, who was part of the flotilla, has called for her release and that of her comrades. The ongoing blockade and conflict have led to a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with thousands of casualties reported since October 2023. The flotilla, comprising 50 ships from 45 countries, aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged region.
