WB: Cost of Rebuilding Syria Will Be Approximately $216 Billion

Damascus: The World Bank has released a report titled "Physical Damage and Reconstruction Assessment in Syria 2011-2024," which estimates the cost of rebuilding Syria at approximately $216 billion.

According to Yemen News Agency, the report presents a comprehensive assessment of the damage to infrastructure and residential and non-residential buildings from 2011 to 2024. It reveals that nearly a third of Syria's pre-war capital has been destroyed, with direct physical damage amounting to approximately $108 billion.

Infrastructure has been identified as the most affected sector, accounting for 48% of the total damage, which amounts to $52 billion. This is followed by residential buildings at $33 billion, and non-residential buildings at $23 billion. The governorates of Aleppo, Rif Dimashq, and Homs have suffered the most destruction.

The World Bank report further estimates that the cost of rebuilding the damaged assets ranges between $140 billion and $345 billion, with an average estimate of $216 billion. This includes $75 billion for residential buildings, $59 billion for non-residential buildings, and $82 billion for infrastructure. Aleppo and Rural Damascus are identified as the governorates most in need of investment for reconstruction projects.

The conflict has severely impacted the Syrian economy, with a decline in real GDP by nearly 53% between 2010 and 2022.
