Sana'a: Yemen, along with the rest of the world, celebrated World Post Day, which falls on October 9 of each year, under the slogan: "Local Service... Global Reach."
According to Yemen News Agency, Ammar Nasser Wahhan, Director General of the General Authority for Post and Postal Savings, emphasized that celebrating this day represents an opportunity to highlight the vital role played by the post office in serving citizens, especially in light of the circumstances the country is experiencing. Wahban explained that the postal sector in Yemen has remained resilient and continued to perform its national and societal duties despite the major challenges imposed by the aggression and blockade.
He noted that the Authority seeks to develop its services and strengthen its presence in all regions by modernizing the infrastructure and expanding the scope of financial, postal, and digital services. Wahban pointed out that the Postal and Savings Authority includes a wide network of offices spread across various governorates, numbering more than 360 post offices and more than 1,500 postal windows, providing various services, including savings, money transfers, pension disbursements, parcel delivery, and services for government and private entities.
He pointed out that the Authority is currently working to digitize postal services and modernize operational systems to keep pace with global technological developments and enhance financial inclusion, especially in rural and remote areas. This will contribute to connecting Yemeni citizens to modern, safe, and reliable postal services.
The Director General of Post praised the role of all postal sector workers in Yemen, who continue to perform their national duty in the most difficult circumstances. He emphasized that they represent the cornerstone of the continuity of this public service, and that the Authority is keen to empower them and provide a suitable work environment that contributes to improving overall performance.
Wahhan called for strengthening cooperation between various official and international bodies to support and develop the postal sector in Yemen, enabling it to continue performing its duties and expand its services to include broader segments of society. For his part, the Director General pointed out Postal Services Director General, Abu Bakr al-Maliki, stated that the celebration of World Post Day represents a global affirmation of the importance of postal services in people's lives. He emphasized that postal services are no longer just a means of transporting mail, but have become an integral part of the social and economic structure of countries.
Al-Maliki explained that the Postal Services Administration views this occasion as an opportunity to renew its commitment to providing reliable and secure postal services that reflect citizens' aspirations and keep pace with changes in the world of communications and services. He noted that the role of postal services expands to include supporting local development and enhancing communication between individuals and institutions.
He added that this occasion motivates everyone, especially in countries facing challenges like Yemen, to redouble efforts to develop the postal sector and make it more responsive to citizens' needs and more integrated with digital transformations and global developments in the provision of public services. Al-Maliki emphasized that postal workers in Yemen constitute the backbone of this system, expressing his appreciation to everyone who contributed to the continuity of service and the continuation of field work, despite the challenges and exceptional circumstances facing the country.
In this context, the Director General of the International Bureau of the Union emphasized On this occasion, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) President, Masahiko Mitoki, highlighted the growing importance of postal services in connecting people around the world, noting that mail remains a vital lifeline that provides essential services to everyone, everywhere. Mitoki explained that the postal network is one of the largest in the world, with more than 600,000 post offices, providing communities around the world with reliable access to communications, trade, finance, and social services.
He added that this network, extending from remote areas to major cities, represents a vital bridge connecting people to the wider world. He praised the efforts of more than 4.6 million postal workers in 192 member countries, whose dedication contributes to ensuring the continued provision of these services day after day. He also expressed his appreciation to all those working in this vital sector, from innovators in development centers to sorting center employees, to those who deliver mail on foot or by various means of transport.
The Director General of the UPU International Bureau called for enhanced cooperation and joint action to ensure the continuity of the postal sector. Developing postal services to ensure high-quality delivery to everyone, everywhere, and connecting local communities to the wider world in a sustainable and effective manner.
