Sanaa:The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has announced the closure of the shrimp fishing season in the Red Sea waters of Yemen, effective this Wednesday.
According to Yemen News Agency, the Ministry has instructed the General Authority for Red Sea Fisheries to inventory shrimp stocks held in cold storage by exporters and other parties, with findings due within ten days.
The General Authority for Marine Science and Research has also been tasked with conducting an urgent study to identify shrimp breeding seasons. This study aims to ensure future fishing seasons are based on scientific research.
The Ministry has directed the Fisheries Authority and the Coast Guard to enhance maritime surveillance and inspections during the closure. They are to apprehend violators and take legal action according to the Law on the Regulation, Exploitation, and Protection of Aquatic Resources and its executive regulations.
This measure is intended to protect fish stocks and marine resources from depletion and overfishing, allowing shrimp populations to breed and grow. The ultimate goal is to ensure the sustainability of fishery resources.
