Al-mahweet: The Technical Committee for Al-Mahweet Water Basin, led by Secretary-General of the Governorate's Local Council Dr. Ali al-Zaykam, convened on Wednesday to review applications concerning new water well drilling, as well as the deepening and maintenance of existing wells.
According to Yemen News Agency, the meeting was attended by key figures including Al-Mahweet undersecretary Hamoud Shamlan and Director of the Water Resources Authority branch Ayyash Al-Talbi. The committee scrutinized applications submitted for well activities, ensuring they met the necessary technical, legal, and administrative criteria. Some applications were approved while others were rejected or postponed pending further technical evaluations.
In addition to reviewing applications, the committee addressed the issue of unauthorized well drilling in the Hufash District. Discussions were held on measures to curb such practices, aiming to regulate water resource exploitation and preserve the area's groundwater reserves.
The meeting saw participation from several committee members and officials, including Governor's Office Director Mohammed Ezz Al-Din, Local Water and Sanitation Corporation Director Abdulghani Al-Qatma, and Environmental Protection Authority branch representative Abda Al-Shaathmi, among others. Dr. Al-Zaykam underscored the importance of adhering to technical and legal standards to protect the water basin and limit groundwater depletion.
Emphasizing the need for strengthened coordination among authorities to combat unauthorized drilling, Dr. Al-Zaykam highlighted the necessity of legal actions against violators to ensure sustainable management of water resources for future generations. He praised the efforts of the Water Resources Authority branch and other agencies in monitoring and regulating drilling activities.
Ayyash Al-Talbi reviewed the technical and legal criteria applied in assessing the applications, emphasizing adherence to approved standards and regulations in the evaluation process.
