Antiquities & Museums Authority Hosts Seminar on Preventing Chemical Hazards in Restoration Work

Sana'a: The General Authority for Antiquities and Museums today organized a seminar at the National Museum entitled 'Preventive Nutrition and Antioxidants in Addressing the Risks of Heavy Metals and Chemicals among Workers in Antiquities Restoration and Conservation.' The seminar highlighted the dangers posed by exposure to chemicals and heavy metals used in the restoration process and offered strategies to prevent and reduce direct exposure to these hazardous substances.

According to Yemen News Agency, the seminar underscored the importance of occupational safety and preventive measures, including the use of personal protective equipment such as dust masks and safety goggles, working in well-ventilated spaces, and utilizing dust-extraction systems. Attendees were advised to practice thorough hygiene by washing hands and face after work and to avoid eating or drinking in work areas to minimize contamination risks.

The event also explored the supportive role of nutrition and antioxidants in mitigating the impact of toxins, emphasizing that a balanced diet provides essential nutrients, while antioxidants combat damage from free radicals and oxidative stress. This, in turn, supports vital body systems responsible for toxin elimination, such as the liver, kidneys, and immune system.

Further, the seminar stressed that effective prevention starts with minimizing exposure to hazardous substances and incorporating protective equipment and hygiene practices. Nutrition serves as a supplementary measure to help the body manage oxidative stress and the ongoing effects of chemical exposure.

During the seminar, Dr. Mohammed Al-Qarwani and Dr. Tariq Al-Sami'i, both nutrition specialists, presented research on the importance of various nutrients in counteracting the effects of heavy metals. They highlighted that sufficient intake of calcium, iron, and zinc can reduce lead absorption, while zinc, selenium, and iron may mitigate cadmium toxicity. Additionally, vitamin B12, folic acid, selenium, and antioxidants play protective roles against arsenic exposure.

The specialists also emphasized the benefits of vitamins C and E, along with B-complex vitamins, for individuals frequently exposed to solvents like acetone. Antioxidants help alleviate oxidative stress, and B vitamins are crucial for metabolic processes and liver health.

The speakers recommended increasing water and fluid consumption to aid kidney function and suggested incorporating antioxidant-rich foods such as strawberries, berries, pomegranates, spinach, and green tea into the diet. They also advised including sources of protein and glutathione, omega-3 fatty acids, B-complex vitamins, and CoQ10, while avoiding soft drinks, excessive sugars, and fried foods to maintain optimal health.
