Dhamar: The Anti-Narcotics Department of Dhamar governorate Security Directorate has initiated an awareness campaign to coincide with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The campaign, which will last a week, focuses on distributing informational materials such as pamphlets and brochures and placing posters at security checkpoints, units, and departments throughout Dhamar city and several districts within the governorate. This effort is aimed at educating the community about the dangers of drugs and methods to prevent their spread.
According to Yemen News Agency, the launch event was attended by several notable figures, including the Deputy Director of Governorate Security, Brigadier General Mohammed al-Moshki, and Dr. Adel Omran, the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Dhamar University. Dr. Omran stressed the urgent need to increase public awareness about the dangers and detrimental effects of drugs on society. He highlighted that drugs are being used as a weapon by external aggressors to target the Yemeni population, exploiting vulnerable regions to promote drug use, which ultimately harms the youth and threatens the cohesion of the social structure.
Moreover, Dr. Omran emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination among security units and relevant bodies such as the health office and the university to tackle this growing threat. The objective is to shield society from the multifaceted repercussions of drug abuse, which span security, social, health, and economic sectors.
The event also featured insights from Colonel al-Azzi al-Mutawakkil, Director of the Anti-Narcotics Department, and Major al-Hashemi al-Mutawakil. They reiterated that drugs represent a severe threat to society due to their destructive impact on individuals and families. They underlined that drugs are being weaponized in a soft war aimed at eroding generational values and weakening social ties. The complexity and infiltration of drug-related issues into societies necessitate collaborative efforts from both official bodies and the community. The campaign seeks to intensify awareness efforts and protect children and youth from falling prey to drug abuse by promoting upbringing grounded in faith and Quranic teachings.
