Sana'a: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has expressed strong disapproval of the recent Security Council session that featured a briefing by Hans Grundberg, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Yemen.
According to Yemen News Agency, the Ministry condemned the perceived bias and alignment with US-British positions in the envoy's briefing, particularly with his focus on the Red Sea issue and its connection to the peace process in Yemen. The Ministry criticized the envoy for neglecting critical issues affecting the Yemeni populace, such as the severe humanitarian suffering resulting from an ongoing siege and economic warfare led by the United States, in collaboration with the Saudi regime.
The Ministry emphasized the need for the UN envoy to advocate for the reopening of Sana'a International Airport, a vital passage for approximately 80 percent of citizens, including those needing urgent medical treatment abroad. The continued closure of the airport, leading to preventable deaths, was termed a humanitarian crime violating basic human rights as per international laws.
Additionally, the statement highlighted the envoy's failure to address the arbitrary measures by the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) that have disrupted maritime transport to Red Sea ports, affecting the flow of goods and market stability. The Ministry also criticized the envoy for ignoring the commitments and roadmap of the peace process, pending activation for over two years.
The Ministry rejected the envoy's insistence on conditioning the peace process on Sana'a's silence regarding regional aggressions, viewing it as an alignment with US and Saudi policies against Yemen. This stance, the Ministry asserted, undermines the peace process and highlights the envoy's failure to achieve tangible humanitarian progress.
The statement refuted accusations of human rights violations by Sana'a, noting the daily deaths from malnutrition and lack of healthcare due to the protracted aggression and siege. The Ministry also condemned the envoy's characterization of regional violence, framing it as a response to US and Israeli aggression against Iran.
The Ministry reminded the envoy to adhere to his UN mandate with professionalism, independence, and neutrality, maintaining impartiality among all parties involved.
