Garment and Textile Industry Signs MoU to Empower Families in Sana’a

Sana'a:A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed in Sana'a between the General Corporation for Spinning and Textile Industries and the Social Affairs and Labor Office. This agreement aims to empower productive families in the garment and textile industry under the initiative 'From Thread to National Product.'

According to Yemen News Agency, the MoU outlines a plan to provide beneficiary families with necessary yarn and production inputs from the spinning and textile factory. This initiative seeks to transform home-based skills into organized, income-generating activities, creating job opportunities for families, women, youth, and vulnerable groups. It also aims to integrate small-scale and family-based industries into national production chains.

The partnership intends to establish a sustainable model linking the productive sector with economic empowerment programs, contributing to the replacement of imports with locally manufactured products. This will expand the market for the corporation's output and increase demand for domestically produced yarn and textiles. Acting Minister of Economy, Industry and Investment Sam Al-Bashiri praised the collaborative efforts and stated that the initiative aligns with government directives to activate economic empowerment programs.

Al-Bashiri noted that cotton serves as a cornerstone of national production chains. Efforts to reactivate the spinning and textile factory and establish mechanisms for supplying locally produced yarn are considered a first step toward sustainable domestic production. The MoU is expected to directly benefit over 200 families and producer associations. Additionally, ongoing support for the factory includes the provision of equipment and initiatives to improve cotton seed quality.

Plans to launch two new factories, workshops, and cotton ginning facilities are part of the broader economic empowerment program. Marketing efforts include establishing markets, bazaars, and a permanent exhibition venue for productive families to sell their goods. The family unit is emphasized as a cornerstone of a sustainable economy.

The signing ceremony was attended by various officials, including Amin Juma'an, Secretary-General of the Local Council in the Capital Sana'a, and Nasser Al-Kahli, Director of the Social Affairs and Labor Office, among others. The MoU represents a practical partnership to help families transition from limited home-based production to organized production units capable of meeting local market demand.
