Muscat: A meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources on Wednesday discussed ways to develop the soybean value chain, boost production, and marketing, while also addressing the needs of the livestock and animal-feed sectors. The meeting was a significant step towards enhancing the agricultural landscape by focusing on key aspects of the soybean industry.
According to Yemen News Agency, the meeting reviewed the status of soybean production and challenges across the value chain, including production inputs, agricultural extension services, post-harvest handling, storage, processing, marketing, and distribution. It emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination among agricultural, service, marketing, and livestock sectors to establish an integrated system for soybean production and marketing, aiming to increase its use in animal-feed manufacturing as a source of protein.
The discussions underscored the necessity of expanding contract farming to link farmers with markets and manufacturers, thereby encouraging private-sector investment in soybean production, processing, and marketing. Proposals included improving access to seeds and inputs, expanding cultivation in suitable areas, upgrading post-harvest and storage operations, and supporting agricultural processing and research. Additionally, there was a focus on linking producers with feed mills and other beneficiaries.
These measures are part of the ministry's broader efforts to develop agricultural value chains, increase productivity and added value, support food security, and strengthen the agricultural economy. The initiative reflects a comprehensive approach to overcoming challenges within the soybean sector and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
