Sana'a: A meeting held today at the Sana'a Governorate Chamber of Commerce and Industry, chaired by the Acting Minister of Economy, Industry and Investment Sam Al-Bashiri, discussed the situation of leather tanneries and leather goods factories.
According to Yemen News Agency, the meeting, attended by Deputy Minister of Finance Nasser Al-Hamdani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy for the Industrial Sector and Economic Cities Sami Maqbuli, Sana'a Governorate Undersecretaries for Investment Yahya Jamaan and for Municipalities Mohammed Al-Habbari, Executive Director of the Yemeni Organization for Standardization, Metrology and Quality Control Abdullah Al-Attafi, along with owners and representatives of tanneries and leather product factories, reviewed the difficulties facing tanneries and leather factories and the conditions of stalled factories as a result of the aggression against the country.
The Acting Minister of Economy stressed the keenness to resolve the problems facing tanneries and leather product factories, support stalled factories, address the challenges they face, and protect their products. He noted that the ministry is working to regulate oversight procedures through a single window to prevent duplication, reduce irregularities accompanying field inspections, and protect local producers from negative practices. He emphasized the need to provide the ministry with a list of production inputs for all tanneries and factories and the production processes for each product to enable the ministry to develop plans to protect local products.
Al-Bashiri also pointed out that the ministry is working on a draft national policy document to develop the tanning and leather and leather products sector. He emphasized the importance of the participation of chambers of commerce and industry and local authorities in resolving problems of the productive sector within their geographical scope, raising production efficiency, helping address the problems of stalled industrial projects, and finding appropriate financing mechanisms for them.
The meeting listened to interventions by owners and representatives of tanneries and leather product factories and their proposals to address the problems and obstacles they face, in the presence of the Vice Chairmen of the General Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry Mohammed Salah and the Chairman of the Sana'a Governorate Chamber of Commerce and Industry Board Hashim Al-Suwari.
The meeting affirmed the necessity of addressing the conditions of stalled factories, granting local producers all exemptions, incentives, privileges, and guarantees stipulated in the Investment Law, organizing field visits to assess the reality of stalled factories, and forming a joint team from the ministry, the Standards Authority, the Sana'a Chamber of Commerce, and local producers to review production input lists and follow up on the implementation of the meeting's outcomes.
